Entered the Royal Navy at HMS Ganges 8th Dec. 1931.
Posted to Cruiser HMS Berwick in China station Oct. 1932 to Oct. 1934.
Joined Battleship HMS Rodney in 1935 as an Ordinary Seaman.
Various postings followed during which time Ted qualified as a Seaman Torpedoman
He was with HMS Tartar as Coxswain of their power boat at the doomed rescue attempt of the Submarine Thetis
Ted passed the examinations for Petty Officer rank in Dec. 1939 and Joined HMS Prince of Wales in Oct. 1940.
Survived the action against the Bismark and the subsequent sinking of Prince of Wales, following which Ted was detailed to crew a small customs vessel involved in the evacuation of service stragglers from Japanese held territory. It was for this action that he was awarded the DSM at the end of the war.
After the war Ted remained in the Royal Navy, finally leaving the service in 1961 after 27 years, plus
22 years as Boy's service.
Involvement continued via the RNVR until his final retirement in July 1976 as Lieutenant Commander RNRV at the age of 60.
