Robert survived the sinking
of HMS Prince of Wales. He gave an interview some time afterwards in which he said: "We were being attacked by a formation of enemy torpedo bombers and although we did our best to avoid the torpedoes, one of them hit us catastrophically on the port side aft. There was a terrific explosion and a lot of what I might call 'expensive' noises went on afterwards which made me realise that we were in a bad way. I remember my last feelings before leaving the ship were the deathly hush after the throbbing of a ship. Everything was absolutely silent". |
