Petty Officer Hornsey and C P O Stoker Prince were destroying the secret and confidential books in the boiler room when the first shells hit HMS Peterel. Later in the action, William was on the deck next to Chief E. R. A. Allen when a Japanese shell exploded and blew them both into the water, neither man was ever seen again.
