The oak leaf awarded for a 'Mention in Despatches'

 

John died when HMS Li Wo was sunk, he was posthumously 'Mentioned in Despatches' for bravery when his ship was attacked by the ships from the Japanese convoy. Possibly referred to as 'Lt Featherbridge' in the book 'Stand by to Die' in which he manned the 4" gun as 'rammer number'.
