The oak leaf for a 'Mention in Despatches'

 

Lieutenant E. N. Derbidge, RNZNVR, M.I.D.; born Christchurch, 27 Jul 1910; clerk; died while prisoner of war, 3 Mar 1942.
Neil was awarded a 'Mention in Despatches' for his part in the action which led to the sinking of HMS Li Wo. After struggling ashore he was later shot in the stomach by a looting gang on the island after HMS Li Wo was sunk, sadly he died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp soon after arriving.
