Charles William George Laughton survived the PoW camp (Macassar, Celebes) and was repatriated via Australia and South Africa (for recuperation).
He became CPO (backdated promotion) and was honoured with the British
Empire Medal whilst serving at Chatham. His last ship there was the 'Superb'. I believe that he passed examination for Writer (date unknown), but, at my mother's request, did not apply for the promotion.
On completing his 22 years in the Royal Navy, he found that civilian life did not suit and re-enlisted
in 1954, he was seconded to H.M.S. Eaglet (by then, RNVR Liverpool) as CPO (stores).
He died of a brain tumour whilst still in the service, in 1959. My mother Mary Elizabeth (nee Keer) survived him until recently.
I have a very few old papers and photographs dating back approximately to WW2 (before and after, but relating to the Encounter and PoW)) also his medals. I would be happy to give them to wherever you recommend.
